He was born in 1931 and died in 2009, born in brazil he created "theatre of the opressed"
As a theatre practitioner he believed in 3 different aspects to theatre and the performance:
- Building: the building for Augusto was the place where the performance would take place meaning it would have a massive effect on the final product in terms of performance as he thought the performance had to be specific and truthful to its stage. therefore incorporates the relevance to set lighting and sound again contributing to the main feel of the performance and its view as a piece of art, thus meaning the incorporation of actors, agents and audience all contribute to the construction of a performance.
- Society: Augusto believed that everything was a performance; from walking down the street to a football match we are always being watched by an audience in how we behave especially now when naturalism is the most popular form of theatre to date an example of a public performance is the royal wedding where the whole world watch a man and a women get married with many feeling overwhelmed even though the audience had very little connection to the bride and groom.
- Everyday life: again linked to socioty Augusto belived that from when we wake up to when we sleep everyone including ourselves are performing; "we perform the scene of eating breakfast" is one of Augusto's famous quotes meaning that everyday is a performance almost following the lines of one of Shakespeares quotes "the world is a stage" these thoughts led Augusto to belive that anyone can perform and that theatre wasnt something exclisive.
Boal belived that even a spectator was an actor in conjunction with his views on everyday life he thought that during a performance the audience were just as equal and could freely controbute to the performance instead of being a voyer who just sit and watch a performance like a book.
This youtube clip gives a short incite into who Augusto Boal is.
Due to the fact he was a political activist in the 1970's Augusto was taken away and tourchered.
but this didnt stop him and again made him one of the worlds most interesting activists as he was trying to change the world and most of all brazil through theatre that was truthful and relatable to its time.
